Can You Use an iPhone in a Hazardous Area?

Yes โ€” with a certified ATEX or IECEx Ex case. Here is how it works, which cases are available, and what to consider before procurement.

The short answer

A standard iPhone is not certified for explosive atmospheres and is banned from classified hazardous areas (Zone 0, 1, 2 for gas; Zone 20, 21, 22 for dust). However, several manufacturers produce certified Ex cases โ€” protective enclosures that make the iPhone + case assembly compliant for Zone 1 and Zone 2 deployment.

The Ex case carries its own ATEX and/or IECEx certificate. The iPhone is inserted into the case in a safe area, and the sealed assembly can then be taken into the hazardous zone.

Why iPhone? Field workers already know iOS. IT departments already run Apple Business Manager. Camera quality exceeds any dedicated Ex phone. An Ex case lets you deploy the phone your workforce wants to use, with the certification your HSE team requires.

How an Ex case makes an iPhone safe

An Ex case achieves intrinsic safety through several engineering controls:

The assembly (case + iPhone) is tested as a single unit by a Notified Body and receives a certificate of conformity. The certificate specifies exactly which iPhone models are covered.

Available Ex cases for iPhone (April 2026)

ManufactureriPhone modelsZoneATEXIECExGas groupKey feature
Xshielder iPhone 16 Pro Max Zone 1 Yes Yes IIC Replaceable host โ€” iPhone swappable without tools
Xciel iPhone 15 / 16 Pro Zone 1 Yes Yes IIC Established brand in oil & gas
Atexxo iPhone 14 / 15 / 16 / 17 Zone 1 Yes Yes IIC Dutch manufacturer, flameproof (Ex db) conversion

All three are dual-certified (ATEX + IECEx) for Zone 1 with Gas Group IIC โ€” the highest classification, covering hydrogen and acetylene atmospheres. Note: Xshielder and Xciel use intrinsic safety (Ex ia / Ex ib) while Atexxo uses flameproof enclosure (Ex db) โ€” a different protection concept.

What stays working inside the case?

FeatureStatusNotes
TouchscreenYesTouch passes through the case window; glove mode varies by manufacturer
Camera (photo/video)YesOptical window covers rear camera; quality is near-native
Face IDYesFront camera window preserves Face ID functionality
Wi-Fi / CellularYesSignal passes through case material; minor attenuation possible
BluetoothYesWorks with certified Bluetooth accessories
NFCVariesSome cases block NFC; check manufacturer specs
Charging portNoSealed in hazardous area; charge only in safe area
Physical buttonsYesMechanical pass-through for volume and power

Replaceable vs sealed host

This is the most important procurement distinction between Ex cases:

ApproachReplaceable (e.g. Xshielder)Sealed (e.g. Xciel, Atexxo)
iPhone swapUser can open and replaceFactory conversion only
Yearly iPhone upgradeBuy new iPhone, reuse caseSend case back for re-conversion
Failed iPhoneSwap in replacement on-siteSend unit for service
Fleet logisticsSimpler โ€” cases and phones stocked separatelyEach unit is a fixed assembly
Certification basisEx ia (two-fault tolerance)Ex ib or Ex db (varies by manufacturer)
Procurement tip: If your organisation refreshes iPhones annually through Apple Business Manager, a replaceable-host case significantly reduces lifecycle cost. The case stays; only the iPhone changes.

What about Android?

There is no ATEX certified Ex case for Android phones. If you need Android in a hazardous area, the option is a dedicated Ex phone โ€” a purpose-built device certified end-to-end. See our comparison of the best ATEX smartphones in 2026 which includes both Ex cases and dedicated Android devices.

Rules for using an iPhone in a hazardous area

  1. Insert the iPhone into the case in a safe area only โ€” never open the case inside a classified zone
  2. Never charge in a hazardous area โ€” making/breaking electrical connections creates spark risk
  3. Check the case for damage before each shift โ€” cracks, broken seals, or damaged windows invalidate the certification
  4. Only use the certified iPhone model โ€” the certificate lists specific models; using an uncovered model voids the certification
  5. Do not attach uncertified accessories โ€” cables, cases-over-cases, or third-party screen protectors may affect the certified assembly
  6. Follow the manufacturer's inspection schedule โ€” Ex cases require periodic inspection per IEC 60079-17
Common mistake: Workers sometimes assume that "it is just a phone case" and treat it casually. An Ex case is a piece of certified safety equipment. Damage, modification, or use with the wrong iPhone model creates an uncertified device in a hazardous area โ€” a regulatory violation and ignition risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an iPhone in Zone 1?

Yes, inside a certified Ex enclosure from Xshielder, Xciel, or Atexxo. All three offer Zone 1 (ATEX + IECEx) certified solutions for current iPhone models. Xshielder and Xciel use protective Ex cases; Atexxo performs a full device conversion using flameproof (Ex db) enclosure technology.

Which iPhones are compatible?

As of April 2026: Xshielder supports iPhone 16 Pro Max. Xciel supports iPhone 7 through 16 across multiple models. Atexxo supports iPhone 14, 15, 16 and 17. Always check the current certificate for the exact model list.

Does the camera work?

Yes. All major Ex cases include a certified optical window that preserves rear camera functionality for inspection photography and video documentation.

How much does an iPhone Ex case cost?

Contact us for current case pricing. Total cost (case + phone) is significantly less than a dedicated Ex phone, which also has inferior camera and UX. Inquire here.

Can I charge the iPhone inside the case?

Never in a hazardous area. Remove the iPhone from the case in a safe zone and charge normally. Some manufacturers offer certified docking stations for safe-area charging without removing the phone from the case.

Is there an ATEX case for Samsung Galaxy?

Not currently. The Ex case market focuses on iPhone due to the iOS/Apple MDM ecosystem and standardised hardware dimensions. For Android in hazardous areas, use a dedicated Ex phone from Bartec, ecom, or i.safe MOBILE.
